Anode rod is applied to use in the water heater tank, which typically made of magnesium. It is referred to as sacrificial anode rod why more reactive to corrosive elements in the water than metal itself. So the water will essentially corrode the sacrificial anode before moving on the tank surface. So exchange the rod every 2-3 years, may last longer the lifespan of the water tank.
Beside the household electrical equipment water heater, the magnesium anode also used in other fields such as RV water heater, boiler fittings, transformer cooling tank or other kinds of fresh water tank.
